TOUR 1

Short Tour to Kapit

By adding just one-and a half or two days to a conventional journey to Sarawak, it is now possible to visit fairly remote Iban longhouses on a small tributary river in the famed Kapit District -- something that is both meaningful and highly enjoyable.

Arrive by air in Sibu early in the day or on the evening before. Take a taxi to the Kapit wharf in Sibu and board a morning express boat to Kapit

Longboat

We will meet your express at Kapit and immediately take you by longboat (see photo) upriver. Enjoy casual lunch on a river bank en route and reach a native Iban settlement by early mid-afternoon.

After getting acquainted with Iban friends, we invite one or more of them along for a longboat ride and jungle trek to a waterfall and to swim.

We return to the longhouse village for late afternoon community activity, visiting and dinner. The principal gladly translates for those who wish to talk with our Iban hosts.

In the evening, on the river by dark, we usually hunt frogs with longhouse people or, conditions permitting, hunt other quarry.

Next morning, after bathing and breakfast, we visit another Iban longhouse, taking part for a while in whatever daily activity is occurring. We return down river to Kapit for a walk around town before boarding boarding the 12:40pm Husqvarna. Travelers reach Sibu for late afternoon flights to Kuching, Miri, or farther destinations.

We strongly recommend advance reading in order to gain the most from your visit. Malcolm MacDonald’s Borneo People is a good place to start. Bookshops at major hotels in Kuching and elsewhere sell appropriate background materials.
